Leadership is no longer simply about managing people, assigning tasks or making decisions.
Today's leaders are expected to create clarity, communicate effectively, develop people, manage change and make decisions in an increasingly AI-enabled workplace.
Gallup's latest workplace research continues to highlight the importance of managers in employee engagement, with managers accounting for a substantial share of the variation in team engagement.
The Leadership Formula
A practical way to think about modern leadership is:
Leadership Impact = Clarity × Communication × Capability × Accountability
If any one of these is weak, leadership performance suffers.
1. Clarity — Make People Understand the “Why”
Employees need to understand:
- What are we trying to achieve?
- Why does it matter?
- What does success look like?
- What is expected from me?
A leader who creates clarity reduces confusion and unnecessary escalation.
2. Communication — Don't Just Give Instructions
Strong leaders communicate in both directions. They listen, ask questions, give feedback, explain decisions, handle difficult conversations and adapt their communication style.
Harvard Business Review has emphasised the shift from traditional command-and-control leadership toward more conversational approaches to leadership and organisational communication.
3. Capability — Develop People, Not Dependency
A manager who solves every problem creates dependency. A leader who coaches people creates capability.
“What can I do to help this person solve the problem themselves next time?”
4. Accountability — Combine Support with Standards
Empathy without accountability can create ambiguity. Accountability without empathy can create disengagement. Effective leadership requires both.
A Simple Weekly Leadership Check
- C — Clarity: Did my team understand priorities?
- C — Communication: Did I listen as much as I spoke?
- C — Capability: Did I develop someone this week?
- A — Accountability: Did I follow up on commitments?
That's the CCCA Leadership Check.
What Organisations Should Develop
Leadership development should not stop at generic leadership theory. Organisations should identify the specific skills their managers need and build programmes around their actual challenges.
At Entrepôt Training Institute (ETI), Dubai, we design customised workforce-development and upskilling programmes around organisational requirements, including leadership, communication, management, problem-solving and future-ready skills.
